External Graphics with ThunderBolt

So minutes ago i was reading about thunderbolt, something which apple includes in most of there products from imacs to ipads, and the article said you could use external graphic cards through a thunderbolt port. I believe that is a huge feature and good be a solution for the crappy intel graphics. Has anyone tried anything like that and does it work, or is proprietary.
