Holden Caulfield & Jay Gatsby
Whenever I'm bored on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I often find myself re-reading either The Great Gatsby or Catcher in the Rye. This post is directed to those of you that have read it.
What do you think an encounter between Holden Caulfield and Jay Gatsby would be like? What if Holden Caulfield had become Gatsby's neighbor and not Nick? To me, Gatsby represents everything that Caulfield hates: phonies, but also everything that Caulfield admires: compassion, loyalty, and a deep longing to revisit the past.
Both books seem very time orientated. Gatsby wishes to relive a relationship with a woman he hasn't seen in years, and Caulfield wants to live his childhood indefinitely.
What do you think?
