New Link Syntax is weird

So I'm familiar with

• HTML

  <a href="url">link text</a>

• BB Code

  [url=url]link text[/url]

• MediaWiki

  [[link text][url]] link syntax

But the current Verge syntax for links in comments

"link text":url

is really weird. I tried highlighting some text and using the "insert a link" button and I was super confused.
