Someone help me say hello to Mr. Conrad

So, upon my search for a new book to read, I met Joseph Conrad. Apparently, he's a big deal. He is considered to be one of the best novelist of all time, and he has influenced many authors that include George Orwell (author of 1984 and Animal Farm) and William Golding (author of Lord of the Flies).

I want to get to know him, and I'd like to ask The Verge's Book Club to help me do so. I'd like some of his short stories to start me off (if you could give me a title of a short story and a source to where I could read it, that would be awesome!) and maybe a couple of essays. After that, I'll go ahead and start Heart of Darkness (which, I hear, is really good).
