If the iPad were perfect
We would not have needed 4 nay 5 of them... in the span of 3 years. Surface will improve. And once we get to haswell/broadwell thickness, weight and battery wont be factors... Surface 2 with Haswell will be available by q4 2013. Surface with Broadwell Q3 2014. The third iteration of Surface will be faster and more powerful than any other tablet, it will run windows legacy and metro software and will last the full ten hours people hope for. The drag race will be how Surface evolves and how apple decides to ultimately merge their tablet and Macbook air lines - which probably happen in the 2014/2015 time frame.
