Xserve

I recently aquired an old G5 xserve node cluster rack. And i have a few questions about it.

Do i need a computer/master node to run it? Or can i just hook up a raid arry and go to town?

If i do need a master how do i hook it up to the xserve? I know to hook up the raid ill need the pcix fiber card. But what hooks it to a pc or master rack? Firewire 800?
