Verizon HTC 8X locked down & lacking updates!

Engadget ran a story in November about the Verizon HTC 8X being sold unlocked. This, along with wireless charging had me choose this model over the international version as I use both Verizon and AT&T in my household.

What a mistake that was! I have tested this phone on AT&T and T-Mobile only to find Verizon blocking MMS and Internet Connection Sharing when not operating on their network. When I called Verizon technical support they were quick to put the blame on every other carrier while mentioning they were unaware of any issues and offered no solution to the problem.

A quick search on the XNA forums or on Google shows countless individuals around the world that bought the Verizon HTC 8X(at Microsoft Stores, or elsewhere) having the exact same issue. I spent a good two hours on the phone with Verizon being transferred from person to person. Eventually Verizon transferred me to HTC technical support where the women I spoke to was quick to say Verizon has locked down several parts of the 8X and there was nothing they could do to help.

Another huge mark against the Verizon model is the lack of updates. Microsoft and HTC rolled out the Portico update back in December, yet Verizon customers are still left scratching there heads two weeks into February. When I approached Verizon they were unaware of any updates for the phone and deferred any questions to HTC technical support. When I mentioned to their support staff that HTC has rolled out the update, as well as AT&T and T-Mobile they only stammered and offered no real answer again.

Verizon's model of the 8X is tempting with the inclusion of wireless charging and LTE but isn't worth the headache of having to deal shady attempts to lock down a phone along with the lack of timely OS updates. I ended up buying the international version supported directly by HTC and haven't looked back.
