Chrome permanent desktop mode?

For the love of god, why can't I find an option to make Chrome display desktop websites by default?

I found some xda topics with some hacks and whatnot, but I'm not currently rooted so I can't do it. But what coulp possibly be the reason to omit this? Are google engineers also aware of how terribly slow chrome is, and they think this will help?
