Google Won't Monetize
Over the last few days I keep seeing comments on the web (and on The Verge) about Google monetizing their products.
The demise of Google Reader has been a big instigator of this: "Google never found a way to monetize Reader," one commenter said. "That's why they shut it down."
Last night's mention of possible Drive add-on Google Keep spawned additional mentions, as has today's connectivity issues with Google Drive. "I wouldn't trust a non-core Google offering -- especially one that isn't monetized."
The theme generally seems to be the same: if Google doesn't monetize it, there's a risk they'll abruptly pull the plug.
But that doesn't seem likely. Especially if by "monetizing" you mean displaying ads.
Actually, I think we'll start seeing more and more Google products that don't contain ads. But with those few products that do have ads, the precision targeting will be incredible.
Especially as their data collection gets better and better. Everything they do is about data collection. Remember, there's just one Google Terms of Service for all of their product offerings: which says they can use all of your data.
Think about the forthcoming Google Glass. Don't expect to see ads flashing onto your screen. But can you imagine a Google product that will be better for data collection? Google will know what I do, where I go, who I see (facial recognition using the camera). And of course to a lesser degree, newbies like Google Keep will be great at data gathering: it'll know what I plan to do, remember and save (and where I was when I identified those things).
Eric Schmidt said a few years ago, "Technology will be so good it will be very hard for people to watch or consume something that has not in some sense been tailored for them."
The future of Google monetization won't be that I see a lot of ads. But when I do, they will be designed perfectly for me.
