Google's unified messaging system, too late?

I was going to start this discussion a week or so ago but forgot, an article I saw on Android Authority earlier reminded me of it.

I have to say that I've waited so long for unified messaging that I've kind of lost interest now. That being said, I'm still looking forward to seeing it. The thing is, I can't see it taking off. By now, everyone I know uses one of two messaging apps, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. There are other apps I believe are pretty popular too like Kik, Viber and Hike.

The problem I see is much like the problem that social networks like Google+ and Path face. 'If all of my friends are on Facebook, there's no point in me using Path'. I think it will be much the same with this. None of my friends will use this even if they have an Android phone, because everyone uses WhatsApp or Facebook. It may be a generalisation but I believe it to be pretty likely.
