Why Windows will always be king

Criticising Microsoft seems to be a hobby for many people these days. They view Windows 8 as a failure and see Microsoft sliding into irrelevance. I honestly don't think this will happen and here's a few reasons why.

  • There is no platform as open and well supported - where iOS leads in being first for mobile app development, Windows is usually the go to platform for desktop application developers.
  • Low cost devices - us tech enthusiasts may slate low end devices, but they certainly show their worth in the market. I personally use a relatively low cost, low end laptop. I use a Fujitsu Lifebook AH530 with a Dual core Pentium processor clocked at 2.13 Ghz, 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. This is no where near cutting edge and I know it, I mean it only cost me ¬£270 brand new. For my usage it's the only PC I need and probably the only thing most users need. Windows enables such feature rich low end devices.
  • Windows is so well known - I can bet even if you ask someone who hasn't got a clue about computers, that they'd tell you their computer runs Windows. They might not be able to tell you which version, but they'll know it's Windows. Where Office is synonymous with productivity, Windows is synonymous with computers, whether it be at home, school or at work. I work in a local computer store and since I've been there I've never had a single enquiry about Mac, only Windows PCs.
So sure, PC sales may be slipping and Windows tablet sales may be low, but we're in a transitional period and once people realise this, Windows will be the force on tablets that it already is on PCs.
