New tablet-centric design trend across the web??

I first noticed this over at Engadget: the tiny main column of content looks ridiculous and just plan stupid.

I'm too lazy to blur out the personal stuff from Facebook but you get the idea: giant column of empty spaces on the sides. Amazon seems to be among the few that still employs dynamic scaling:

It's obvious that these websites are designed with tablets in mind, but do they really need to alienate desktop users in the process? I can't be the only one that find this extremely annoying!
