Your thoughts on Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state of the US
There is a movement for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the United States of America. There has been a lot of mixed feelings about this, here on the Island and in the US. For example, some people think we just want to live off welfare and other benefits, basically another "weight". Other, more open-minded people, embrace new forms of cultures and opportunities like they did with Hawaii and Alaska. My stance is for statehood. I once dreamed of an independent Island of Enchantment, but because of all the political hassle independence is no longer a choice. And if we were to be independent, our economic situation would worsen. Some people think we would be a "weight" to the US. But they did so as well with Hawaii and Alaska, which in their time were economically unbalanced as well. Statehood helped them recuperate, and in turn, they gave and are giving back to the US. I fully understand we will have additional responsibilities being another state, but its a better choice than being in this limbo that we have been for more the 60 years. I'm Puertorican and I would embrace statehood. I would like to know what you guys think about this. All positive and negative comments are welcome, that is the beauty of democracy, although I would appreciate something constructive and not the first thing that comes to your mind.
