It's the simple things...Emailing a video

Hi all,

Quick intro, I'm a new Android user. After having owned all the iPhones from the 3G to the 4S and a couple of iPads, I decided it was time for a change (so as Apple with iOS7 hopefully) and jumped ships first by buying a Nexus and recently the excellent HTC One (I'm loving the hardware and even the often maligned Sense, it's uncluttered and fast).

Have no fear, I am not about to bash the phone nor Android in the next paragrpah, I just want to highlight the area where Android kind of breaks down and gets bad press from: doing the simple things....

What do I mean?

Let me illustrate by taking a simple scenario through both OSes:

I'm taking a random video of my 1 year old son (as new parents do) and 2 minutes in, finding it funny, I decide to send it my parents since they hardly get to see their clown of a grandson.Right, simple everyday scenario I'd say.

Let's put it to the test:

iOS:

  • Pull up Camera app
  • Press record
  • Get subject to do funny things
  • Press stop
  • Press edit to trim
  • Share by email
  • The video is compressed in seconds and email is sent

Voila!

Android:

  • Pull up Camera app
  • Press record
  • Get subject to do funny things
  • Press stop
  • Go to Gallery app (HTC specific)
  • Find video
  • Press edit to trim
  • Share by email
  • Receive message "Can't attach message over 25 MB"
  • Scratch head
  • Go back to Gallery to see if you can change video size and resolution easily, turns out you can't.
  • Google problem looking for a simple solution, none exist
  • Download a couple of video conversion software
  • The first one doesn;t recognise the video
  • The second one's interface is terrible and asks you to choose the output resolution. I don't know, whatever will make my 1 minute long video fit in an email... I have to work it by myself by outputting different files and each conversion takes 5 minutes...

45 minutes after having taken the video, I can finally email it.

Ahhh the simple things!

You could argue that it took that long because it was the first time but even now that I have the software, it would still take more than 5 minutes to go from pressing stop on the camera to send in the email and I would have to jump from Camera to Gallery to trim, then from Gallery to the video converter, then from the video converter to Gmail...

You can also argue that I could use Youtube or Facebook but I do not want to share my private moments with the world, just with my parents.

It took me a good 6 weeks to find what I consider to be a major flow on the Android and the HTC One, other than that I am loving it. If ever any of you had a solution to my problem though, please feel free to share.

Thanks
