AT&T has begun introducing solar-powered mobile charging stations in New York in new collaboration with the city. The New York Times reports that starting today charging stations will be installed in public parks, beaches, and other public areas, allowing residents and tourists to top up the battery in their iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry smartphones.

New York authorities have worked to install free public Wi-Fi spots around the city — now it is making sure people can continue to use them. Resembling helicopter blades, the stations are 12.5-feet high with three solar panels on the top and are capable of charging up to six devices — on any carrier — at the same time. AT&T will place them in Union Square Park, Metrotech Plaza, and Rockaway Beach for up to a month at a time until October. Should the pilot be successful, AT&T says it might roll out solar charging stations in more US cities.
