The first single from the upcoming Nine Inch Nails album Hesitation Marks is streaming on Soundcloud, giving fans an early taste ahead of the song’s official release on Thursday. “Came Back Haunted” is a more mature sound for the band — Reznor’s subdued vocals float over a pulsing, minimal backdrop as the groove ebbs and flows through the 5-minute track.

Overall, it's closer to the band's early work than its more recent, experimental releases. Interestingly, artwork for the single (above) was created by Russell Mills, the same artist behind 1994's The Downward Spiral and its singles.

It looks like the Soundcloud release might have taken Reznor by surprise, possibly for making it out ahead of tomorrow's retail release on iTunes and the band’s own NIN.com. The new studio album, the band's first in five years, will be released on September 3rd, midway through a massive, four-month international tour with Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky.
