What will the name of the budget iPhone be?

As you know, naming is a pretty important thing to consider when launching a product, especially for Apple. The name definitely has to be simple and easily remembered if you want to have a successful product.

Many leaks have pointed that there will be a budget plastic-shell iPhone which is like a cheaper version of the iPhone 5. And there will be the 'iPhone 5S' coming as well. But how about the budget iPhone?

Here's a brief history of all of the names of the iOS devices Apple has released:

  • 2010: iPad
  • 2011: iPad 2
  • 2012 March: New iPad
  • 2012 November: iPad with Retina Display/4th Generation iPad and iPad mini

  • 2007: iPhone
  • 2008: iPhone 3G
  • 2009: iPhone 3GS
  • 2010: iPhone 4
  • 2011: iPhone 4S
  • 2012: iPhone 5

  • 2008 to 2012: iPod touch (1st Generation... 5th Generation)

The iPhone 5 successor is rumoured to received a camera flash upgrade and other upgrades while maintaining the name design as the iPhone 5. So there probably isn't any doubt that it will be called iPhone 5S. But what about the budget iPhone? What could it be called?

So far, there is one name, iPhone Lite, which sounds un-Appleish. Perhaps it might be the iPhone 8GB.

What it definitely won't be called is iPhone 5, because that would lead to buyer confusion. It also won't be called the iPhone mini because it is reported to share the same screen size & resolution as the iPhone 5.

Most importantly, rumours are just rumours, so the assumption that the leaks are accurate and the two iPhones will be launched together might not hold true. Who knows Apple might just fix the entire naming system altogether when these two phones are launched.
