Does Windows 8.1 fix the OEM "clean install" problem?
For people who don't know already, here's the problem:-
1. Buy Windows 8 PC with Windows 8 Core as the OS (Not the pro version)
2. Have Windows 8 Pro
3. Try to clean install Windows 8 Pro from disk
4. Installation detects Windows 8 Core Product Key in BIOS/EFI whatever it's called, doesn't give you a choice, doesn't ask you for a product key, just installs Windows 8 Core
5. Don't have Windows 8 Pro
The solution involves disabling secure boot, making your own bootable media, and inserting a custom file to force windows to give you a choice to install Windows 8 Pro.
Just wondering whether Windows 8.1 fixes this, or whether when trying to clean install Windows 8.1 Pro it will detect the hard coded Windows 8 Core product key, and just install Windows 8.1 Core rather than 8.1 Pro again?
Anyone know? Has this been mentioned anywhere?
