Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition)
I find that there are not a lot of forum posts or articles about the new Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 edition). I find it weird because it can be I think the best Android tablet of the year. Let me explain why I think so...
First I about the part that I like the least, I know that it might not be the best looking tablet and Samsung doesn't use the best materials but from what I've read it's definitely an improvement over the previous iterations. Some people are bothered by the hardware buttons on the tablet, I understand why but if everything else is good it's doesn't seem to be a deal-breaker for me.
Based on the reviews of the past iterations of the Galaxy Note 10.1, people said that they were slow and the screen resolution was not good. This time the CPU and the resolution are a lot better. So that's a first thing I am really excited about.
But actually the main reason why I really want this tablet is the software. I know it's not a Nexus device but in that case it might be a very good point. I have an Android tablet (Motorola Xoom with Cyanogenmod 10.1) I really love to use it but I am really frustrated not to be able to multi-task on a tablet. When I say "multi-task" I mean having 2 apps displayed at the same time. Typically I have would like to do something else while watching videos or while reading emails. With the Note 10.1, I would be able to do that. I don't really understand why Google hasn't come with a way to do that on a tablet.
Also people say that Android hasn't enough tablet apps. I'm personally quite happy with the available apps but anyway: if you use split screen it's not that much of an issue to use apps that where made for phones. I've checked and of course not all apps can support split screen but there is an API provided by Samsung. So it's not just a selection of apps made by Samsung, developers can support this feature in their apps. (I checked and some of the apps I use already support this feature)
Last thing I like on that tablet: the s-pen. I have a Galaxy Note 2 so I have a s-pen already... I think it's useful. For example I use a lot my phone to take notes at work (meetings,...) . I think it makes even more sense on a tablet. This might not be the main reason why I want the Note 10.1 but this is a very good feature.
Google will release the new Nexus 10 this year with Android 4.4. I am going to wait for the announcement and see if there is anything to allow muli-windows. If not, I think I will buy the Note 10.1. Some rumors say that Google is doing a version of Android that will would work on all kind of devices including laptops. So I guess they will have to think about a way to multi-task... I doubt it will be Android 4.4... So I'm tired to wait. I think Samsung does it better for tablets then.
By the way, where I live (Hong Kong) I see a lot of people with the Note 8... So I think Samsung really did something great with this Note product line. Google didn't even officially released the Nexus 10 here, we can only buy imported ones in small electronic shops.
