Google should take on Windows now
As a consumer brand Microsoft is at a low point.
Right now Google's strategy is to overlay Windows / OS X with its own apps and services, but I feel like this does little more than bloat Chrome. It's kind of grossly analogous to throwing a toolbar onto someone else's browser. Meanwhile, Microsoft is adding deeper integration with Bing in Windows 8.1. Isn't that exactly the kind of thing that motivated Google to build Android to compete with iOS in the first place?
But between all the bad press and the restructure going on at Redmond there has never been a more opportune time for Google to make inroads on Microsoft's platform. If they would scale Chrome OS/Android into a real desktop operating system that could run native applications, and sold it on hardware with actual local storage--I feel like Google could easily take on Windows at least in the consumer space. It's the one piece of the Google ecosystem that feels incomplete.
