My experience with Android - Part II
I posted around 2 weeks back here
This time , I want to cover other aspects.
Why I chose Android ?
My smartphone "OS" kind of thing started with an iPod Touch in 2010 and I really fell in love with Apple products and Eco system especially the appstore. There was literally no competition to it at that time.
I always thought myself as a future iPhone customer.I like Apple but in recent years they got little rotten. This is not hatred or some kind of flame post but its my opinion. Some of you may be thinking "This is going to be another post which describes apple as this or that while praising android".
Let me get this straight , I don't work for any company.I am a consumer with my own opinions like any of you here.
For me , Apple products worked well but nobody justified the price of them. Some would say that Apple products are smooth to use , they have so many apps and Apple supports devices with longer update cycle etc.
But in my experience , except the apps part , remaining things were partially true. For example , iPod touch 4th gen runs horrible on iOS 6 , it lags so much , the same case with a friend's iPhone 4.Added to this , lot of features of iOS 6 are omitted but both still runs horribly.
Apple does support devices longer but most of the features in newer updates are always missing on older devices (software features too).Another example is iOS 6 for 3GS , how come iPod touch 3rd gen didn't get the same update ? Its just the simple fact that Apple wants you to upgrade to newer device. There is no Airdrop support for many devices , I don't know what special hardware is missing for such a basic thing on other devices.Just like any other company , I see Apple as "one" of them now.If Apple wants me to purchase new devices everytime , then what's the point of paying that premium price for it.The previous sentence sums up everything what I said till now.
Moving next to WP8 , I have no words to describe how bad WP8 journey has been .I mean it doesn't even alert you when a friend sends a message.Whatsapp was horrible , Mails come but attachments are missing (funny part is Mango devices show those attachments but WP8 devices don't) , WP8 is totally unfinished and rushed project with nasty bugs.
This brought me back to final alternative , which is Android.Only thing left for me was to decide which device to get.
Doing things in "Android Way"
Actually , there is nothing like "doing things in Android way" in reality. This only applies to WP or Apple. Most of the time , I found Android too basic to use and also very easy to use.
"Easy to use" or "Hard to use" depends on how we set our device.
Live Tiles Vs Grid Of Icons Vs Widgets :
Many people say that grid of icons are way better and also "universal" (which I agree) but sometimes it doesn't work.
For example , if I want to play music , I should perform 3-4 steps to do that (whether its android or iOS or WP) , because that's a limitation of the icons.Same case with Livetiles as well.
If there is a music widget instead of an icon , I can simply resume music with single tap.
It depends on the situation , to really justify which setup is better.Android gives the choice of both icons and widgets. So user has the choice.
Android can be set as simple , minimalistic icon grid or mix of icons and widgets or simply widgets on homescreen.
I can give so many examples but I think you understood what I am trying to say here.
Google Services :
Google stuff is well integrated into Android.I only wish if Google Maps are available offline like HERE Maps.Google Now is great.
Google Keep is a great app which I have been using lately , I can sync it across desktop (Chrome apps) and my device. Its simplistic and handy to use.
I used to think that Android needed babysitting but Actually It doesn't. It manages things on its own pretty well.Battery Life is very good on GS4 , I am able to get a full day usage without troubles but I should maintain it around 10% before sleep otherwise , It dies in middle of night.I am not using any battery saving apps or defenders etc.
I am not a big fan of fancy hardware , I was happy with Lumia 820 hardware before (WVGA AMOLED screen and good camera , VGA front etc.) (mark my word , "hardware" not software). In others , decent hardware is enough for me.
Everything is better on S4.However , build of 820 is better. Even though S4 screen is lot bigger , due to small bezels , area of the device is quite close to 820 (except the little height increase)
Camera is very good.Lot of options on S4 camera , even though its clutter , user has lot of options to choose if he wants or simply can choose auto (default).
Call Quality is good , Screen is gorgeous and TV remote works pretty nicely.
SwiftKey Keyboard :
Swiftkey works like magic.Typing has become so easy with flow.I had to mention keyboard under special heading because its really that good. Its much more accurate and easy to use than any keyboard I have ever used in the past.
App-to-App Communication :
One of the common example for this is sharing.Right now , I am using Next Browser.Lets say that I want to share a link.I can share it via lot of apps.I have many options to share.
If I open certain kind of file , I will be asked what app to use in order to open or perform action.
When I download an Image , I can access it through built-in file manager or gallery or any app which has related functionality. That downloaded image can be from a 3rd party browser or any app.
In Android , I find Resuming to very good.I don't find myself seeing tabs being reloaded or game restarting etc.
WP also has excellent resuming capability along with Android. But iOS seems random in resuming , Sometimes it reloads tabs even though no apps are present on app switcher , other times it doesn't (I am speaking of iPad 3rd gen with 1GB RAM but not iPod Touch with 256MB RAM) .
Now multitasking ,
Android multitasking (or touchwiz) has things like Multi-window , Pop-up Player etc. , I always have an option to use them in unique situations.
Background tasks also work great on Android.
Other Things :
Whenever I used WP , I always missed iOS due to the fact of missing apps and more matured OS.
When I use Android , I usually never miss iOS.
However some apps are very well optimized for iOS.When I use such apps , I always want to go back to my iPad (pulse for example).
