You'll need to choose an expedited shipping method if you're planning to put it under the Christmas tree, but for today only you can purchase Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 tablet for 30 percent off. The company has picked its own hardware as today's gold deal of the day, and skimming over the page, that brings the cheapest model (32GB with special offers) down to a price of $299.99. At the top end is the 64GB HDX with 4G LTE data; today that'll cost you $414, whereas normally it'd be almost $600. (We doubt most people need the cellular option of a Fire tablet, to be clear.)

Are there better tablets out there? Absolutely. But the Fire HDX isn't a bad choice if you're already hooked into Amazon's digital music / movies / TV ecosystem and will be using it primarily for entertainment. It's fast and capable — and at least for today, it's pretty darn cheap. Plus, the neat display trick, which adjusts the HDX's brightness and white balance on the fly based on nearby lighting, is still pretty cool and something many other companies haven't bothered with. So if you want a consumption tablet, the Fire HDX 8.9 will probably do you just fine.
