The Patel Plan for a Better Internet : The Verge Manifesto : A Draft

We, the people of the Internet do hereby proclaim, that we solemnly resolve to push our elected representatives to do the following :

The Patel Plan for a Better Internet : The Verge Manifesto : A Draft

  • Not let the government pass legistlation like SOPA or PIPA, in the original form or any derivative form thereof because they can fundamentally break the open architecture of the internet, in the name of protecting the intellectual property of copyright-holders
  • Not allow Comcast-Time Warner merger to happen because there that's a serious anti-trust breach
  • Not allow the government appoint cable company lobbyists like Tom Wheeler as Chairman of the FCC
  • Not allow AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon and any combination of the big carriers thereofto merge, because consolidation in the cellphone provider business will only lead to monopoly in the marketplace and fewer choices and higher prices for consumers
  • Not let any one of the cellphone carriers or any of the cable companies or any of the ISPs violate net neutrality
  • Add checks and balances on the powers of the NSA so that NSA employees don't have unfettered access to the private data of citizens

Internet access should be a fundamental right and citizens should have equal and unfettered access to it. Having corporations throttle bandwidth and access will result in a fundamental skew of the power structure in favor of the rich, the powerful, and the well connected.
