[HOW TO] HTML5 Video at The Verge
The video player of the verge has been bugging me a long time now for various reasons (Airplay) and I know a lot of you feel the same. So I thought I'd share this.
As most of you might know iOS devices get to use the HTML5 player. We can use curl to get this video address:
For live events (hosted on livestream):
curl -s $(curl -s http://www.theverge.com/foo |grep -o 'http://[^"]*false')|grep -o 'http://pdvod[^"]*'|tail -1
Others (hosted on ooyala):
echo http://player.ooyala.com/player/ipad/"$(curl -s http://www.theverge.com/|grep -o 'provider_video_id[^,]*'|head -1|sed 's/[^:]*//;s/:*"//g')".m3u8
This is tested with OS X.9.1 but should work with all unix systems.
I've written an Automator-Service, which can be started in Safari. It gets the URL from the current tab and opens a new tab with the corresponding video. You can find it here: http://cl.ly/2c1M1o2V2i1N Just put it in the Services folder of your user library.
I use the Safari extension Media Center from Marc Hoyois to airplay to XBMC.
Please keep in mind that this is still alpha and the very first version, it might not work with all videos. Feel free to ask any questions, any feedback will be appreciated.
As this method doesn't circumvent/hack/fake anything and the URLs of the HTML5 videos are openly available, this should be totally legal. If I'm wrong give me a hint and I'll take down the script I provided.
