What's the logic behind preventing account deletion?

I attempted to delete my Verge account the other day, but struck out while searching for an automated method. I decided to visit Account Killer, and found this message:

How to delete your The Verge account:

Just like with SB Nation and Polygon (these Vox Media sites share accounts), you cannot delete your account. Anonymise your personal data and complain here: http://www.theverge.com/contact-the-verge

What's the logic behind that? Having to contact an actual human to maintain your privacy seems very analog, and frankly counter to the editorial stands The Verge has taken in terms of privacy.
