Microsoft’s developer preview program for Windows Phone allows handset owners to bypass carriers and get the latest updates. Microsoft used the “preview for developers” for a recent Windows Phone 8 update, and it’s a simple application that runs on the phone and unlocks updates to the latest version. Although it’s designed for developers to use, anyone with a Windows Phone 8 device will be able to use the process to upgrade to Windows Phone 8.1.

Anyone with Windows Phone 8 can update to 8.1 this month
