US vs European tastes in home theater

Browsing various, 'post your setup' threads on different forums both US and UK. There's always something that jumps out at me;

US = Big ass screens, small, cheaper speakers

Europe = Much smaller screens, big ass speakers.

Anyone else notice this? I guess it is somewhat down to price of electronics and room sizes (ergo viewing distances). Here in the UK I think it's something like 6% have a screen 50" or greater and large screens are quite a bit more expensive last time I checked.

It's odd considering most in the UK live in close proximity to their (probably quite pissed off!) neighbours.
