Need help optimizing work 2009 Mac Pro (10.7.3) for Premiere Pro CC
so just to get straight to it, I have an '09 Mac Pro at work and I honestly find it no better than my 2012 Macbook Air (Mavericks) when it comes to video editing.
i understand that the SSD helps the MBA, but there really isn't anything this Mac Pro does that's faster than the MBA. Not encoding, not rendering, nothing. Since this isn't my personal Mac Pro, I am wondering if the fact that it uses 10.7.3 is a huge factor with its performance?
Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
Hard Drive 7200RPM HDD
I'm trying to enable CUDA, but it's a no go. In an attempt to download the latest drivers, it seems I need to upgrade to 10.7.5... but unfortunately, since it's a work computer, Im unable to update the OS.
I use the same hard drive setup on both my MBA and the MP, so that's not really an issue for me.
What should I do? I feel at this point, since my MBA performs better, I should probably just edit on that. Yes, I know that sounds crazy, but I'm just going by what I'm experiencing. I can export a 3 minute 720p video on my MBA in 5 minutes. It's no different than the MP. Playback performance, effects rendering, etc. dont feel any faster either.
I'm so confused. I was expecting the Mac Pro's video editing performance to blow away my MBA's despite its age. I'm certain it has mostly to do with Lion (which I absolutely HATE). What's wrong with this picture?
