Android in my car: Nexus 7 In-Dash, Nexus 5 Qi wireless charging

With the recent news of Android Auto I thought you guys would be interested in an alternative solution that does not require a new car :).

For a couple of months now I've been enjoying my setup in my car and just wanted to share it with you guys.

I have installed a Nexus 7 to replace my head unit in my vehicle and I have also installed a Qi wireless charger under my sunglasses holder to wireless charge my Nexus 5 whenever i drop it in.

Let me explain.

I didn't completely remove the factory radio. Instead I removed the faceplate of the radio to make it smaller and pushed it in back of the tablet. This allowed me to continue using the steering wheels controls. I am able to control the volume of the tablet, and also change the Radio source from AUX to AM/FM If I want to.

My setup is pretty straight forward. I start the car, the Nexus 7 is charging so it turns on (See below for the command and Instructions), automatically connects to my Nexus 5 Hotspot, and you're good to go. It can automatically launch to whatever app you'd like (Radio app, Music app,...) with Tasker. When I shut off the engine, the Tablet turns off. This ensures my battery is always at 100%.

As far as the Nexus 5, I am used to just turning on the Hotspot whenever I am walking towards my car so it will be on and ready by the time the Nexus 7 turns on. You can also automate this process with Tasker. For example, you can have Tasker automatically turn on the Hotspot whenever the Nexus 5 is wireless charging.

Here are the parts I used -

PARTS

PowerGen Dual USB 4.2A Car Charger - to charge the Qi wireless charger for the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 7

Metra Double Din Kit - Find the Double Din kit for your vehicle

Miccus Mini-Jax RX - Bluetooth Adapter. Plugs right in to your Auxiliary port. I also have a USB port right next to it so I have it charging at all times. You can just use a regular auxiliary cable to connect from radio to Tablet but I didn't want another cable to worry about. Plus my Auxiliary port is under my arm rest and not near my radio.

LG Wireless Charging Pad - Qi Charger I have it under the sunglass holder.

NEXUS 7 SETUP

Root the tablet
Install Tasker to be able to:
- Power off tablet when not charging (tablet turns off when car is off)
- Keep tablet awake
- Enable Wifi, Bluetooth

Use command - fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0 - (tablet turns on when car is on) - INSTRUCTIONS
Also created a custom Boot Animation when the tablet is powering on. You can see it in the video below. -INSTRUCTIONS

OPTIONAL: Install Nova launcher to remove things like the Dock and have more control of the interface of your tablet. You can install any 3rd party launcher you like.

NEXUS 5 SETUP

All I did was install Tasker and set it up to turn on Mobile Hotspot whenever the phone is Wireless charging. That way I just drop it in the sunglass holder and I can start tethering to the tablet.

The best part is that all of this is reversible. Attach the faceplate back to the Headunit, remove the Double Din kit and you are back to stock.

PS - Here is an older video where I still had the Radio under the driver seat. Even though there was enough leg rooms I did not like the look so I was able to remove the faceplate from the radio and stick the head unit in back of the Tablet where it is not visible.

If you guys have any questions feel free to ask. I posted this setup in XDA as well and received pretty good feedback on it so I thought you Android Freaks (myself included) will appreciate it. :)
