Shigeru Miyamoto is responsible for the creation of gaming's most famous figures, including Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, and Zelda, but for his first animated film, the legendary game developer has turned to some of his lesser-known creations: Pikmin. The plant-like creatures will star in Pikmin Short Movies, a set of three animated short films produced by Miyamoto that will show at the Tokyo International Film Festival next month.

The movies will track the cutesy, burbling Pikmin as they work with the star of the three Pikmin games — Captain Olimar — to find a strange treasure, adventure around a construction site, and make a special kind of juice. It'll be the first time the developer has taken a conspicuous role in the creation of a film about his characters — he wisely stayed well away from 1993's Super Mario Bros. movie.
