Spotify to hold May 20th event ahead of Apple's Beats Music relaunch

Spotify may be hoping to get a jump on Apple's relaunch of Beats Music — or whatever its second take on streaming music is called. The company has just invited press to an event in New York City on May 20th. "We've got some news" is the only tease offered by the leading premium subscription music service.

The press conference follows The Verge's report that Apple has been pressuring record labels to abandon Spotify's free, ad-sponsored streaming tier. Spotify must also now contend with the rise of Tidal, a high-fidelity music streaming service owned by Jay Z and a band of other top musicians. Tidal is attempting to battle Spotify by offering its subscribers exclusive content and higher-quality audio streaming.

How does Spotify intend to counter Apple's massive clout and Jay Z's ambition? We'll find out in just under two weeks. Spotify's event is scheduled to begin at 11AM, and we'll be there live to bring you whatever the company has in store.
