J.K. Rowling is bringing the beloved boy wizard back in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

On the 18th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, English author J.K. Rowling has today announced a new stage play that will "tell a new story" starring the beloved boy wizard from her books. The play, titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is a collaboration between Rowling, fellow writer Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany. Rowling goes on to say that it will not be a prequel and that, once fans have seen the play itself, they'll understand why it's not a new novel and that the theater was "the only proper medium for the story."

There's no word yet on the cast for Rowling's upcoming play, but it appears unlikely that we'll see the stars of the hugely successful film serialization of the books reprising their roles. Actor Daniel Radcliffe, the Harry Potter of the movies, is now in his mid-20s and not quite so well suited to depicting a young wizard (even if he is an experienced theater performer). Then again, given the mystery about the time, place, and setting of the Cursed Child play, nothing can be ruled out just yet.
