Samsung is creating a multi-million dollar fund to compensate employees and contractors who developed cancer because of working in its factories. According to Reuters, Samsung is putting 100 billion won (around $85.8 million USD) into the fund, which will be used to compensate sick workers, make payments to the families of deceased workers, and fund research into increasing worker safety at its chip and display facilities. By one activist group's count, around 200 workers, 70 of whom have died, became sick while working at Samsung's plants. Samsung apologized to the workers and their families last year, saying that several people involved with semiconductors had developed "leukemia and other incurable diseases." Samsung reportedly negotiated with workers and their families on the fund's creation.
