Microsoft has started inviting media outlets to a special Windows 10 devices launch next month. The software giant is holding a press event in New York on October 6th to unveil a range of hardware running Windows 10. The Verge previously confirmed details of the October launch, and Microsoft looks set to launch its Surface Pro 4, Lumia 950 / Lumia 950 XL handsets, and a new Microsoft Band in the same hardware event. Microsoft isn't revealing exactly what the mysterious hardware event is about, other than a hint at Windows 10-powered hardware.

After a disappointing Microsoft event at IFA in Germany earlier this month, all eyes are now on the company to produce its own hardware and showcase the replacement to the Surface Pro 3. The main focus for Microsoft's hardware event will be the two new Lumia handsets and the Surface Pro 4. A Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL have been rumored for months, and specifications and images for both handsets have already leaked. All that's really left is to see what these handsets look like away from press renders and how they fit into Microsoft's new Windows 10 Mobile ecosystem.

Surface Pro 4 won't be a drastic change

Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 won't be a drastic change from the Pro 3 as the company has promised to keep the charging mechanism and overall form factor similar for businesses that have invested in accessories like the docking station. That doesn't mean Microsoft won't make big changes, though. The software giant can increase display size and resolution, while making the Surface Pro 4 thinner and lighter. Rumors have suggested Microsoft is planning Windows Hello support for the Surface Pro 4, but it's unlikely the company will fit an Intel RealSense camera into the thin device. Instead, a fingerprint scanner on an updated and refined Surface keyboard sounds more likely.

More recent rumors have also pointed towards a 14-inch version of a Surface device. We previously heard whispers of an additional Surface device, so it's possible Microsoft may have a larger surprise addition to the lineup. The Verge will be covering Microsoft's Windows 10 devices event on October 6th, so stay tuned for our live blog and a closer look at Microsoft's devices.
