At a time when the major studios have glutted the market with superhero movies, it’s hard to find smaller projects that can compete with the hype. Sleight manages to rise above the crowd. The trailer makes it look like a promising antidote to the usual Marvel and DC epics.

The movie, which debuted earlier this year at Sundance, follows Bo (Black Nativity star Jacob Latimore), a gifted Los Angeles street magician who uses a powerful electromagnetic device to do levitation tricks as a way of getting by. He’s smart and savvy, but it isn’t long before he’s dragged into his city’s underbelly to make ends meet, all while improving on his designs as his situation gets more complicated and perilous.

It’s easy to see the shades of ‘Iron Man’ in ‘Sleight’

It’s easy to see shades of Iron Man in Bo’s story. He’s intelligent but brash, and he has to use his considerable smarts and science fiction powers to find redemption and maybe even save the day. We saw roughly the same story in Doctor Strange just last month. But the smaller, more intimate stakes and the Chronicle-esque feel makes it feel fresh compared to typical superhero movies. Sleight hits theaters on April 7th, 2017.
