Mattel's View-Master virtual reality headset is getting some upgrades, with the toy company showing off a new version of the Google Cardboard-inspired gizmo at the New York Toy Fair this weekend. The new View-Master Viewer DLX comes with a headphone connector so you don't have to rely on your phone's speakers, a focal adjustment for use without glasses, and improved optical lenses. Toyland also reports that the headset has redesigned latch to keep the whole thing secure, and a new smartphone mount that can handle a greater range of phone sizes (including the smaller iPhone 5). The DLX's price has been bumped up $10 to $39.99, and the device is due in stores fall this year. Although this is marketed as a kid's toy, many VR enthusiasts found that it was one of the best Google Cardboard-based plastic mounts on the market.
including a two-player labyrinth game and a new dinosaur experience pack
The DLX is also getting some new VR experiences — including a two-player labyrinth game. One player will wear the VR headset and take on the role of the "escapee," solving riddles and puzzles to find their way out of a maze, while the other will use a physical book of clues to help their friend get out alive. Mattel is also adding a new dinosaur-themed "experience pack" for the View-Master (in collaboration with National Geographic), adding to the currently-available trio of Space, Destinations, and Wildlife experience. The two-player labyrinth game has a suggested retail price of $19.99, while the dinosaur experience pack (which includes an "survival adventure game" as well as interactive dinosaur skeletons) will sell from $14.99. Both should be available this fall.
