The first trailer for Oliver Stone's Snowden is here, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the former NSA contractor. The film is set to hit theaters on September 16th, and also features Shailene Woodley as Snowden's girlfriend, and Zachary Quinto as the journalist Glenn Greenwald. (The trailer also shows Nicolas Cage as an unidentified Shouty Government Man.)

We saw a teaser for the film last year, but this is our first proper look at Stone's take on Snowden's story. If the trailer is anything to go by, it's a by-the-numbers spy thriller with some computer graphics thrown in to represent the US government's mass surveillance programs. Stone directed the film and co-wrote it, too, basing the script on two books, Guardian journalist Luke Harding's The Snowden Files, and Time of the Octopus by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena. We're hoping the film itself isn't quite as schlocky as this trailer makes it out to be.
