As of today, you can explore Minecraft in virtual realty via the Gear VR. Minecraft: Gear VR Edition is now available on the Oculus Store for $6.99. That doesn't mean, however, the game is available on Oculus Rift.

The announcement at Oculus.com is careful not to mention the Oculus Rift headset, instead emphasizing that Minecraft: Gear VR Edition is available on the discrete digital Oculus Store meant for Samsung's Gear VR hardware.

Here's how the announcement describes this specific version of Minecraft:

Minecraft: Gear VR Edition supports all the features of Pocket Edition, including Creative and Survival modes, skins, and multiplayer. You can choose between the more comfortable default theater view or the more intense and immersive first-person view that lets you stand beside your creations.

The post emphasizes the "mobile freedom" Gear VR provides the Minecraft player, which is a little odd because another version of Minecraft is in development for the Oculus Rift, which must be tethered to a computer. Our very own Nick Statt had a chance to try that version of the game in March.
