Your first six months are free

1Password, one of the best password managers out there, is switching up its business model. Today the app's developer AgileBits is introducing a monthly subscription for individuals priced at $2.99 per month. That's cheaper than the $5 / month family plan that 1Password launched earlier this year, its first foray into subscriptions. For that $2.99 fee, you get access to 1Password's apps on every platform (both desktop and mobile), which means you don't need to worry about paying for individual licenses or paying again when major new versions are released.

Three bucks a month can add up over time, though, so thankfully there's a bit more to it than that. For one, you get automatic syncing across devices through 1Password's own hosted platform; you don't need to use iCloud or Dropbox as a go-between. This also includes data loss protection and access to your passwords over the web at 1Password.com. Subscribers can get secure document storage, and their extremely sensitive data is also protected behind a "new multi-factor security model."

Everyone who signs up for or switches to 1Password's individual subscription before September 21st will get their first six months for free — "no ifs, ands, or buts (or ads)" according to AgileBits. The company claims that it will continue supporting the traditional per-platform license model and plans to update 1Password for both sets of subscribers. Subscriptions are clearly the route that AgileBits hopes most customers will choose, though. $2.99 is a small enough cost that some people might never bother cancelling once they've signed up. But if you're of the "pay once and be done with it" mindset, then hopefully AgileBits sticks to its word on supporting both models.
