Here's what to do if iOS 10 temporarily bricked your iPhone

Apple just released iOS 10, which promises to be the best version of the platform to date. Unfortunately, some users are complaining that the update is bricking their phones. Even if it isn't technically a full brick, it's the furthest thing from ideal, and no one wants a useless phone. Apple has issued a statement that it has resolved the issue already, but for anyone who was affected, here's a quick-and-dirty guide to getting your phone back to normal:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and open iTunes.
  2. At this point, you'll need to force restart your phone and put it in recovery mode. To do that, press and hold the Sleep and Home buttons. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.
  3. You should soon see a prompt in iTunes that asks you whether you want to update or restore. Select Update to continue with the upgrade process.
  4. Repeat steps 1–3 if setup takes longer than 15 minutes.
  5. When the installation is complete, go ahead and set up your phone.

And that should take care of it. If it doesn’t work, well, lucky for you AppleCare is usually pretty good at resolving this kind of thing. Get on the phone or make your way to an Apple Store without delay. If you haven’t updated your phone, maybe hold off for a little while to make sure things have all shaken out. You can use that time to back your phone up to iTunes and / or iCloud — that’s something you should always do before a software update, anyway.
