Missy Elliott doesn’t really have to do much to destroy the competition. After more than a year of sporadic appearances since the release of 2015’s “WTF (Where They From?),” she’s back with “I’m Better,” a tense, stripped-down single for an album that we can only hope might come out soon. (Who knows?) Like most Missy videos, this one is effortlessly weird, featuring Missy as the bird queen of a futuristic, underwater dystopia.

Missy has been relatively quiet over the last year, though she’s done just enough to remind us that she’s still around. After releasing her single “Pep Rally” ahead of last year’s Super Bowl, she appeared on Fall Out Boy’s “Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid),” though she just couldn’t salvage what was already a terrible track. She also seemed to develop a tight bond with Michelle Obama, appearing with her at SXSW and during a Carpool Karaoke with the former first lady and James Corden. Here’s hoping 2017 is the year we finally get a follow-up to 2005’s The Cookbook.
