Tim Cook has been visiting the United Kingdom this week, and the Apple CEO took a few minutes this morning to comment on the problem of fake news on Good Morning Britain, as noted by AppleInsider.

Cook comments that “We have to give the consumer tools to help with this, and we’ve got to filter out part of it before it ever gets there without losing the great openness of the internet.”

Given that Apple is actually a news provider in its own right through its Apple News application, whatever actions the company takes on filters or blocking fake news is sure to be significant. While Apple hasn’t disclosed detailed user data, as of last November Apple News had over 70 million unique users. As Cook notes, fake news “is one of today’s chief problems, it is not something that has a simple solution.”
