WordPress is opening up some new editing options today with the release of a plugin for Google Docs.

The extension works in Chrome and allows anything written in Google Docs to be ported directly to WordPress.com, with “most” formatting and layout choices intact. Publishing can’t happen directly from Google Docs, though — you’ll still have to go into WordPress for a final preview and to click publish.

Pretend like Google Docs is your CMS

All sites hosted through WordPress.com will be able to use the extension. Any independently hosted site running WordPress and WordPress’ Jetpack plugin (which adds features from the hosted version to independent sites) will also be able to use it.

The extension could be pretty handy for anyone sharing a WordPress.com site with other writers. By using the Google Docs extension, WordPress users now have a way to collaborate on what they’re writing, rather than having to edit one story at a time. Google’s support for offline editing could be helpful, too.
