Apple reportedly planning retail store self checkouts
Apple's planning to expand the functionality of its iOS Apple Store app by adding self checkouts, just in time for the holiday season. Both our sources and MacRumors say that for any item on the shelf, you'll be able to open the app, scan the barcode with the camera, and pay using your Apple ID; this system should be active in the next few weeks. Big-ticket purchases will still need retail employees to actually retrieve the products, but the process should be as simple as making your purchase through the app and picking it up. It sounds like a smart way to speed up holiday checkout times, but we'll see how Apple handles theft prevention — if the whole process is digital, there's no receipts to check.
