The Bellus3D Face Camera is a mobile device that makes shockingly accurate, full 3D scans of faces. It's a device that clips on to the top of an Android tablet or smartphone, and it can make a realistic, high-resolution image of a person's face in seconds.

It works through a combination of two 1.2 megapixel IR sensors, a 1.2 megapixel color sensor, two IR laser projectors, and a front-facing camera on the tablet (used to help color the final scan).

Scanning a head is as easy as sitting in front of the camera within the displayed ring, and simply turning your head slowly left and right. The camera takes about 20 seconds to process the scan, after which you're presented with an image that can be panned and lit as you see fit. The Face Camera outputs results as standard .obj files, meaning that it's easy to use them in 3D projects or print them for stunningly realistic (and slightly unnerving) 3D masks.

Bellus3D is still exploring commercial and consumer applications for the scanner, with ideas ranging from virtually trying on makeup to custom VR avatars to the aforementioned 3D-printed masks.

The face scanner is still a prototype for now, but Bellus3D is hoping to release the device for around $300 at the end of 2017.
