Nobody expects the vertical wraparound display

We’ve seen lots of smartphones with screens on the front (okay, fine, that’s pretty much all of them). We’ve seen smartphones with screens on the side. We’ve seen smartphones with screens on the back. Now, a new LG patent found by Mobilescout is taking this trend to its logical conclusion, with the company filing for a display design that wraps around the top of the phone, putting a screen on the front, side, and back of the phone.

I don’t fully get why this is a thing anyone would want

Look, I’m going to be honest here: I don’t fully get why this is a thing anyone would want. The back of the phone is something we primarily tend to use to hold our phones, and seems like a bit of a waste given that it’s nearly logistically impossible to use both sides at once without getting creative with mirrors. And the screen portion on the top of the phone seems like its guaranteed to cause the entirety of your crazy wraparound display to shatter the first time you accidentally drop the device.

Obviously, these are still extremely early sketches of a patented idea that will likely never see the light of day, which given the seemingly impractical nature of the idea is probably a good thing. But it’s good to know that LG is at least trying to come up with some new ideas!

Update February 2nd, 3:40PM: The report for the patent referenced seems to originate at TheLeaker.com — we’re actively searching for the original patent filing to confirm that LG has in fact filed for this phone design.
