In what it's touting as a "first among news organizations," NPR's mobile apps will now be compatible with the Ford Sync AppLink platform. That means full integration with Sync's voice-control system, providing on-demand access to shows such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Fresh Air. Saying "Hourly News," for example, will play NPR's breaking news; other options include playlist-building, topic selection (saying "science" will display a list of relate programs), and local news available across the country.

AppLink works with Android, BlackBerry, and iOS smartphones; NPR joins apps such as Pandora, Stitcher Radio, iHeartRadio, OpenBeak, and Slacker. To take advantage of the new functionality, you'll need to download the new NPR app, available now in the Android Market and iTunes App Store.
