Ricoh's unique GXR system separates the sensor and lens from the rest of the camera, where the memory, controls, ports and display reside. This system offers similar performance to a micro four thirds camera but in a smaller size. The camera units also benefit from having the sensor specifically designed to complement the lens it is paired with in a sealed, dust-free environment. Along with an array of camera units, the GXR system can be combined with a viewfinder or a full-size external flash via its accessory shoe and the GXR Mount A12 allows compatibility with Leica M mount lenses.
