By 2005, Nintendo had shifted gears toward a new generation of portable gaming with the DS. Lost amidst this ferver was the Game Boy Micro, released as the final entrant in the storied Game Boy product legacy and presented within a notably compact and sleek form factor. Interchangeable faceplates were available for the handheld, and though praised for it's backlit LCD, a lack of backward compatibility with original Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles contributed to ultimately disappointing sales figures.
