Mattel's Intellivision underwent test marketing in 1979 before seeing a nationwide release in 1980. The console was comprised of two hardwired controllers, each featuring a numeric keypad, four physical buttons and a unique thumbpad which was capable of detecting motion in 16 directions. The Intellivision brought a number of innovations related to voice and even downloadable games.
